About JA
It all started with an IKEA table.
In 2006, our first classroom was the storeroom of a manga cafe, just enough to fit a white LACK table, four stools, a whiteboard with wobbly wheels, and a closet to store textbooks.
Fifteen years later, we now occupy the top level of a building with eleven classrooms, smack bang in the middle of Melbourne CBD.
We have taught families and students, Apple geniuses, ATO managers, council members, and even a Channel Nine news anchor. We are well-versed in engaging students from all backgrounds, culturally and geographically.
Thanks to (no sarcasm here) COVID-19, we moved our Japanese lessons online, and to our surprise, many students enjoyed it.
Particularly those who had to travel long and far. The students who hated coming into the city, the lack of parking, the introverts. Some even get to learn with their friends/families from different countries. Students who prefer to learn in their pyjamas, in the comfort of their own home.
And then we thought, hang on, if we can teach remotely to outer Melbourne, we can also teach to the whole of Australia.
Even the world.
And thus, Japanese Australia was born.
Our goal is to be the bridge between Japan, Australia, and the rest of the world.

FAQs About Learning Japanese
- Study Japanese writing systems. The Japanese language uses four writing systems. To learn Japanese, you will need to study each of them.
- Practice Japanese pronunciation. There are 46 sounds in the Japanese language. These sounds are composed of five vowel sounds by a vowel-consonant combination. (There is only one exception, a sound composed of only a consonant). You can begin studying pronunciation by learning how to pronounce each character in Hiragana and Katakana.
- Learn some key phrases. Knowing some key phrases will allow you to begin practising. Although Romaji should not be heavily relied upon, using Romaji to learn these basic phrases is OK for beginners.
- Learn the rules of grammar. Japanese grammar is very different from grammar in English, so try not to apply English grammar rules to your Japanese study. Learning Japanese grammar will take some time to get used to. Purchase a Japanese grammar workbook and begin following the lessons. Some examples include “Practice Makes Perfect: Basic Japanese” and “A Guide to Japanese Grammar” by Tae Kim.
With consistent studying and speaking, for about 30 minutes to an hour a day, you could speak at a conversational level in Japanese in about 3 months.
It’s all about using the right method, and I’ll say it again: speak from day one! You could start speaking Japanese right now. I encourage you to do so. The more speaking practises you get in, the faster you’ll learn Japanese.
It’s worth noting that some of the reasons why Japanese is hard to learn can apply to many other languages as well. So whether you’re learning German, Chinese or Klingon, every language has its pain points.
Getting past the challenges is part of what makes learning a new language so exciting and satisfying!
Japanese uses four methods of writing.
Japan doesn’t use one “alphabet” for its writing system. Instead, it has four different forms of writing.
Two of the Japanese writing systems are syllabaries. A syllabary is a group of written characters representing syllables in words rather than individual letters. Unlike the Latin alphabet and other languages like German or Russian, Japanese has syllabaries rather than a letter-based alphabet.
It also has a form of writing borrowed from Chinese and an English-sized sounding out words.
Easy to learn; sets you apart from the crowd.
Learning Japanese is easier than you think, setting you apart from others.
Most people in India who wish to learn a foreign language always go for European languages. But, Japanese is commonly never the first choice. So, if you choose a language that most likely isn’t learned by most people, you surely have the chance to be different from the crowd.
Though learning any language requires some amount of effort and commitment, once you have mastered it, it surely will make a difference in your professional and personal life.
Since the number of Japanese speakers in India is quite limited, there is less competition for Japanese-speaking individuals in all spheres.
You can start your career in Japan.
Japan is a powerhouse in many sectors of the global economy. In addition, Japan is a technologically advanced nation and has a scope of greater opportunities for blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Whether IT, automobile, mechanical, textile, healthcare, or construction, there will be enormous job opportunities for foreigners in Japan.
There has been a decline in birth rates and a chronic labour shortage in Japan. As a result, Japan has opened employment opportunities to the rest of the world. To become a part of this global economy, one should learn some basic Japanese. If you want to live comfortably in Japan, learn the Japanese language to help you, as English is not as widely spoken there.
Work in Japanese companies in India
Yes, your chances of getting hired become much higher once you know the Japanese language. If you are looking forward to working in India only but in a Japanese company, you will prefer others if you know the Japanese language. Recruiters in Japanese companies will always prefer those who speak and understand Japanese.
Many Japanese companies operating in India are on the lookout for potential candidates, and you can include your name among the high-paid employee registers in these companies. In addition, your ability to speak Japanese will enhance your professional value and help you gain a higher position in the company.
It can help you boost your mental power.
According to recent studies, learning a new language increases focus improves memorisation, and slows down mental aging.
That’s because the new language comes with a new set of rules, phrases, and structures. So when you’re in the process of learning a second language, you will be able to train your brain to go through those patterns accordingly.
Language as a Skill
Once you have mastered some levels of the Japanese language, you can use it as a skill in your career building. Listening, writing, comprehending, and of course, speaking is required to master any language. With this, you can shape up your career as a teacher, as a freelancer, as a translator and interpreter, as a voice-over coordinator, to name a few, and can earn a handsome amount much more than with any other language.
Japanese are known for their innovation.
Japan has given us everything from the Walkman and pocket calculators to bullet trains and android robots! So, proficiency in the Japanese language will be very beneficial to you. You can only understand what your language allows you to, so if you learn Japanese, you will expand your mind’s innovation capabilities.
Pop-culture
Learning Japanese will help you to enjoy Manga, Anime, and other video games a lot more. You will be able to make sense of references and visual puns that you didn’t understand before. In addition, by learning Japanese, you will watch movies, news, and shows from mainstream Japanese media. This will give you an insight into the pulse of their culture at any given time and help you stay ahead of the curve before it makes it to the West.
One, it’s not as hard as you think! Two, being an able communicator in Japanese means that you can read a host of non-verbal cues, and you will quickly understand how language is not always spoken or written. Awareness of self and others is a vital part of communication in Japan. Competency in a language such as Japanese means you have the skills to travel the globe. Speaking and understanding the oral components are just one small part of a dialogue.

About Japanese Melbourne Language School
JM has been operating as a Japanese language school in Melbourne for 10 years.
We are an Australian school with a Japanese heart.
All of our teachers are native Japanese.
The school started with an Ikea LACK table in a storeroom from 2007 to now occupying the top level of a building in CBD with 11 classrooms.
We are the first school to populate the ‘direct teaching’ method to Melbourne.
The direct-teaching method immerses the students in a full Japanese environment.
As most Japanese don’t speak English in Japan, our student will learn to adapt easier and improve faster.
Different people learn Japanese for different reasons: to prepare for a personal or business trip to Japan, to impress your Japanese father-in-law, to pick up another language as a hobby, to understand manga and anime, or simply to find out what exactly is an Oyako-don.
Rest assured, we have the right course to get you on track.
